Basic Search Operators for Congressional (ProQuest)

  •   Uses Boolean (AND, OR, NOT) – default is AND
  •   Uses NEAR/n (n is the number of words) – default is 100; e.g. Barack NEAR/3 Obama
  •   Uses ALLCAPS (xxx) to find a word in all capital letters - e.g. ALLCAPS(epa) will find documents with EPA.
  •   Uses “exact phrase” for exact phrases
  •   Root Expander is * – liab* finds liable, liability
  •   ? Substitutes for one letter – mailm?n finds mailman, mailmen
  •   Uses a controlled vocabulary for subject terms – click “Find Terms” under the basic search box
