Step 1: Look for a Thesaurus or a Subject Terms

Some databases call the subject terms a thesaurus. Either way, find a list of the taxonomy of terms used in the database.

Step 2: Search for a Term in the Database

Step 3: Add the Term to Your Search (Click "ADD")

Select OR, AND, or NOT from the drop down menu, then click "ADD." The terms will be added to your search box. Click "Search."

Step 4: Refine Your Search Results (If Necessary)

Check the column on the left for "facets" or ways to further limit your search results.

Step 5: Combine Searches in Search History

Combine Searches with AND (limits search) or OR (expands search).
