Computer Use During COVID-19

  • The Law Student Computer Lab are open to law student patrons with keycard access.
  • Public Computers are available for non-law patron use after completing a research interview with Reference Librarians Cory Lenz corylenz@hawaii.edu or Daniel Blackaby blackaby@hawaii.edu.  Please review our Reference Service Policy.
  • The Law Library has a social media policy that applies to all library social media sources (Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc).

Law Student Computer Rules

There are two Mac and two Windows XP computers on the upper level of the Law Library.  They are available to law students, law faculty and visiting scholars, and the law school staff members only.  The computers are maintained by the Law School IT office.  

  • Problems regarding printing services and computer lab troubleshooting is directed to Law IT located at Law Library Room 117, or call 956-4727, or email lawit[at]hawaii[dot]edu.
  • Problems regarding replenishing paper or stapling supplies can be directed to the circulation desk when the Law Library is open.  
 
Printing Information

Each Law student is given $100/year or roughly 1000 pages of free printing.  To add funds, go to the Law IT office at the Law Library, Room 117, or email lawit@hawaii.edu or call 956-4727. Cash in $5 increments is accepted. The IT Office does not make change or give refunds.

To print:

  • Go to print.law.hawaii.edu. Log in with your UH username and password.
  • Create a new password by going to Change details. Create an original password for your print account; it will not affect your UH Account.
  • Go to Web Print. Submit a Job.
  • Select single or double sided.
  • Enter the number of copies
  • Select the file from the computer. 
  • When it says "held in Queue", go to the Print Release Station at the corner of the Computer Lab. 
  • Enter your UH Username and your newly created password.
  • To gain a refund for any botched print jobs, either 1) contact the Law Library IT office and show the unreadable pages to calculate desired refund amount. If the Law IT office is not available, 2) show the unreadable pages to the front desk and they will confirm the situation to the Law IT office who will then refund your print card account.

Computer Use Policies and Rules

The following policies and procedures are designed to ensure compliance with the law and to facilitate an educational environment for all users. Use of our computers assumes that you agree to all rules and policies, and UH IT Policy. Students are also subject to the Student Code of Conduct. Users copying or downloading materials are responsible for complying with applicable intellectual property law, including U.S. Copyright Law.

Scanning for Digital and Print Copies

We have flat bed scanners attached to the computers on the lab. Patrons can scan documents to make physical or digital copies.  Patrons can email the file, or save it a personal USB, or take a picture of desired pages using your smart phone for free.  To print out your scan, it will cost $0.10/page.  The scanning computers are equipped with Adobe Acrobat, email and document editing software. 

Please follow the rules below when using the computers.

  1. Save all your files to a flash drive. The Lab is not responsible for lost data, damage or loss of personal items.
  2. Workstations are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. 
  3. No food or drinks are allowed around the computers.
  4. Computers that are left unattended for more than 10 minutes may be used by others.
  5. Return the keyboard, monitor, mouse and chair to their original positions when you leave the lab.
  6. Do not remove any equipment or supplies.
  7. You should assume that your files and folders may be seen in the course of system or network administration duties or when troubleshooting computer problems.
  8. Do not change any software preferences (desktop pattern, time, homepage location).
  9. Installation and use of music and file sharing software such as, Kazaa and Imesh, are prohibited.
  10. Do not create excessive noise or engage in disruptive activities. Such activities include attempts to circumvent the network, bypass system security (either locally or elsewhere on the Internet), attempts to cause denial of service on any local or other Internet computer, use of profanities, racial slurs, sexual innuendos, and/or pornographic material.
  11. Do not send or use viruses, Trojans, worms or other hacking software. The Lab is not responsible for any loss or corruption of data or files resulting from use of Lab computers.
  12. Report any unauthorized user in the lab to the IT staff.

Public Public Patron Computer Rules
  • Computers available for public use are available in the lobby. Please sign in at the circulation desk for access at 30-minute increments.
  • The computers have internet access but do not have Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint.
  • Please inform the circulation desk if you will be purchasing printing privileges.  It costs $0.10/page to print. We only accept cash and cannot make change.
  • The left-hand computer has scanning capabilities. Please follow the instructions posted on the desk to use the scanner.
  • The second from the left computer is available for physically challenged library users.
  • The computer on the right is available for a public patron.
  • A telesensory enlarger is available to assist the visually impaired. 
  • The Library staff do not provide scanning or xerox copying services.

Public Computer Use Policy

Internet Use Policy

The Internet provides access to a wide variety of educational, recreational, research and reference resources, many of which are not available in print. The Library does not monitor or control the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for the content of the Internet. As an academic Law Library, access to the Internet is provided to facilitate educational research.

The Internet may contain controversial or offensive material. We do not restrict access or protect persons from information found individually offensive, except as provided by law. Most of the materials on the Internet are protected by the First Amendment. However, displaying offensive images or language, or viewing or disseminating R and X rated images may constitute a form of harassment. Library patrons use the Internet at their own discretion and are expected to abide by federal, state and other laws.
